Elon Musk shares sneak peek of the newly announced Tesla Model Y

Elon Musk on Tuesday revealed several details about upcoming Tesla models, and even divulged some surprising information about his own Twitter habits.

All eyes were on the Tesla CEO yesterday as he led the companys annual shareholders meeting. He teased the meeting on Twitter with an image from when Tesla first went public, which he jokes was 1,000 years ago. He followed it up with one of his now-famous Twitter rants. This one ranks pretty high up there.

Tesla shareholder meeting today. Can’t believe it’s been 1000 years since we went public.

While there werent any huge surprises from the meetingat least, nothing as big as what weve come to expect from Musks social accountsthere was one reveal that is sure to whetthe appetite of Tesla diehards: a sneak peek at the Tesla Model Y.

The Model Y is a highly anticipated all-electric crossover SUV meant to fit somewhere between the upcoming Model 3 and Model X. It also completes Tesla’s silly naming scheme, with there now being models S, 3, X, Y. Earlier reports said it would be based on the same platform as the Model 3, but Musk debunked those rumors, saying all future Teslas will be based on a new platform with new electronics.

I think actually we made a mistake in trying to derive the Model X from the model S platform, Musk said. It would have been better to just design an SUV the way an SUV should be designed, design a sedan the way a sedan should be designed. Otherwise youre just trying to shoehorn something in that doesnt make sense.

There isnt much to see in this black and white teaser (maybe it was taken 1,000 years ago?), but well take what we can get.

The Tesla Model 3, the company’s budget-friendly car, will be released next month, but Musk stayed surprisingly tight-lipped on details. He did say the configurator for those who preordered the Model 3 will go online toward the end of July, and that options like paint color and wheel type will be very limited.

The next big reveal for Tesla will be its concept electric semi-truck. Musk said yesterday that he is collaborating with potential customers to design the machine, which will be unveiled sometime in September. The business magnate said he wants to start producing the semi in two years. And in his notorious sly and slightly awkward way, Musk teased out another big announcement for September, Maybe theres a little more than were saying here. Maybe. Could be. Who knows?

But perhaps the most shocking headline yesterday had nothing to do with cars. Speaking about his outgoing Twitter habits, Musk said he just needs, A little red wine, a vintage record player, some Ambien. Magic happens,

It’s OK, Elon, we don’t blame you.
