Charlize Theron has confirmed that a sequel to her 2020 action-thriller The Old Guard is happening, with filming happening next year.

The 45-year-old actress revealed to Variety at her Africa Outreach Project benefit on Tuesday night that the script is complete.

She also added that production is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2022, though she wouldn’t reveal any story tidbits.

She did add that Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will return as the gay couple Joe and Nicky.

‘Oh, yeah! They’re definitely there,’ Theron said,  though she wouldn’t confirm any other characters for the sequel.

The original movie also starred KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harry Melling.

The first movie followed a covert team of mercenaries who are all hiding a secret: they’re all immortal.

They make the surprising discovery of a new member just like them named Nile (KiKi Layne) as their secret is exposed.

Gina Prince-Blythewood (Beyond the Lights) directed the original film from a script by Greg Rucka, based on his own graphic novel series.

The original movie was released on Netflix in early July, which was a big hit with both fans and critics alike.

When asked last July if there was talk of a sequel, Theron said, ‘We’re still pushing this one out.’

‘Let’s have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I’m sure when it’s the right time, we’ll start the conversation,’ she added.

There is no word yet if her director, Gina Prince-Blythewood, or writer Greg Rucka, who adapted the script based on his own comic, will return for the follow-up.

Netflix revealed that the film will have been watched by a whopping 72 million households in its first four weeks, which Theron found astounding.

‘It’s pretty nutty, right? It’s pretty crazy,’ Theron added, though she insisted that she wasn’t thinking about how big the audience could be while making the film.

‘I’m not that brave,’ she added with a laugh. ‘I don’t want to hear predictions. No, thank you.’
