In a first-look trailer for the quirky new show, British and American singletons can be seen wearing the unusual prosthetics which completely disguise their appearance.

From a beaver to an alien to a dolphin, the daters are left with no idea what their potential match really looks like.

Some are more concrete creatures like a devil and a panda, while others appear to be mystery beasts and extraterrestrials.

After watching the trailer, some viewers are totally confused and disturbed.

‘Netflix execs greenlit a show purely for reaction memes and they’ll probably succeed,’ quipped one.

‘I hope we study what March 2020 – 2021 has done to our brain chemistry,’ wrote another.

‘I truly would love to know the Netflix algorithm that led to Sexy Beasts getting greenlit. Like is there a huge subset of people who alternate binge watching “Love is Blind” and 80s body horror movies?’ asked a third.

‘In the future, entertainment will be randomly generated,’ observed yet another.

‘This feels like a dating show that would air in the capitol in the hunger games universe,’ said one more.

The popular account Betches tweeted, ‘Netflix really said “yea we’ve run out of ideas.”

Ania Magliano concurred, writing, ‘Crazy that some of us are worried our ideas aren’t good enough to bother pitching.’

‘The Masked Singer, The Masked Dancer, now this. Was there a sale on theatrical masks a few months ago?’ asked another viewer.

Some thought the series seemed to give too much of a spotlight to furries, or people who like to dress as animals — typically for sexual reasons.

‘No way y’all canceled grand army for a show about furrys,’ wrote one.

‘I’m from the furries. we don’t claim this. please take it away,’ insisted another.

‘It’s all fun and games til some couple is f***ing off camera and one asks the other to “put their dolphin head back on, I think it’s hot,”‘ wrote one more.

Even Universal Orlando Resort chimed in, tweeting a picture of Shrek and saying, ‘He’s taken.’

Quite a lot of commenters are upset that Netflix seems to have recognized the success of the dating show Love is Blind — but rather than giving fans another season of that, they’ve moved forward with a twist.

‘Ok but the reason why “Love is Blind” worked is because Jessica had no idea Mark was 5 foot 7 and he had no idea she fed red wine to her golden retriever,’ wrote one.

Jeff Ramos tweeted: ‘Me: Dear Netflix, I desperately want a new season of Love is Blind. Can you help? Netflix: Jeffrey, we’ve got something even better. Strap in, you freak.’

‘We binged on and obsessed over LOVE IS BLIND and now we have only ourselves to blame for … whatever this is,’ wrote Aisha Harris.

‘This is like love is blind but with my sleep paralysis demons,’ said another commenter.

Some, however, are intrigued by the new concept, with one tweeting: ‘We asked for season 2 of love is blind and they gave us this? i’m appalled and disgusted and will definitely be tuning in on the 21st of july.’

Despite the daters’ weird and wacky appearances, the meet-ups themselves are rather more traditional, with the singles seen heading out for drinks, going bowling, and even enjoying some axe-throwing together — all while modeling their beast-like costumes.

However, there is certainly some apprehension on the part of the daters as far as physical attraction in concerned, with one woman — who is dressed as a panda — asking her date: ‘So what if I pick you, and I’m not what you expected underneath?’

Other singletons were even more forward with their dates. One woman cut right to the chase during drinks with her match, blurting out: ‘I want to get married, I want to have babies before I’m, like, 26. Do you have health insurance?’

At the end of the show, daters must choose one of three potential matches to see again, before their true appearance is unveiled.

The series is being released amid ongoing success for two other dating shows that aired on the steaming site, Love Is Blind and Too Hot to Handle.

Love Is Blind launched on the streaming service in February 2020. The hit Netflix show followed 30 men and women as they built connections in different pods without ever seeing each other; during that speed dating-process, the contestants were allowed to propose to each other whenever they chose.

Once couples became engaged, they were allowed to meet for the first time, resulting in a romantic getaway to Mexico, moving into their own apartment together and meeting each other’s families ahead of their wedding in days.

Meanwhile, Too Hot to Handle, which also premiered last spring, was another runaway dating show success for Netflix.

Competitors from across the globe entered a luxury villa in Mexico, with 10 making it to the final to split the $75,000 prize.

While the total dwindled thanks to a number of rule breaks from randy contestants, the singletons were later given the chance to win back the money.

Netflix co-CEO previously hailed Too Hot To Handle as the streaming service’s ‘biggest competition show ever,’ with the first season becoming the number one show on Netflix during the week of April 20 after it premiered.
